Biogeochemical variability in the upper ocean
نویسنده
چکیده
Differences in the response times of different biogeochemical tracers to upper ocean forcing processes can lead to substantial differences in their patterns of variability. An idealized tracer with a steep vertical concentration gradient is modeled in a flow field representative of an upper ocean front. The surface distribution of the tracer is studied as a function of its response or restoration time scale.

Major challenges confronting marine biogeochemical modeling
Substantial improvements are required in the current suite of numerical models if we are to better understand the present ocean biogeochemical state and predict potential future responses to anthropogenic perturbations. At present, major impediments to marine biogeochemical modeling include the inadequate representation of multi-element cycling and community structure, large-scale physical circ...
متن کاملBiogeochemical Controls and Feedbacks on Ocean Primary Production
Changes in oceanic primary production, linked to changes in the network of global biogeochemical cycles, have profoundly influenced the geochemistry of Earth for over 3 billion years. In the contemporary ocean, photosynthetic carbon fixation by marine phytoplankton leads to formation of approximately 45 gigatons of organic carbon per annum, of which 16 gigatons are exported to the ocean interio...
متن کاملTropical Atlantic variability in a coupled physical–biogeochemical ocean model
A three-dimensional ocean biogeochemical model of the tropical Atlantic Ocean was run for more than half a century (1949–2000) in order to characterize the ocean biogeochemical response to variable forcing over this period. The seasonal cycle in the equatorial upwelling zone agrees reasonably well with observations and other published simulations but underestimates phytoplankton biomass under s...

متن کاملInteractive comment on “Glacial-interglacial variability in ocean oxygen and phosphorus in a global biogeochemical model” by V. Palastanga et al
To test this hypothesis we present a series of experiments with an ocean biogeochemical model of the glacial ocean with and without inclusion of these particulate fluxes. Our work builds on previous box modeling studies by Tsandev et al. (2010) and Filippelli et al. (2007) for the glacial ocean and our own work on carbon (C), oxygen and phosphorus cycling in the present-day (pre-industrial) oce...
